Thanks to the generosity of time and finances from a tremendous community of supporters, we have been able to renovate the Play Yard Entry, and construct the fencing for the small Play Yard space. We will be leveling the ground and adding the pea gravel in the coming weeks.
The “final frontier” is the large Play Yard. With a 29’x60′ space, this will allow the most dogs to play at once, with room for socialization. It will also provide the shelter with the opportunity to host community dog training sessions.
Play yards are saving dogs’ lives. We need your help to renovate and bring new life to the unused space at the East Orange Shelter. Play yards are critical the success of placing shelter pets. Here’s why:
With a new play yard, shelter staff can conduct a comprehensive behavior evaluation for each dog. These behavior evaluations establish a personality profile for the dogs including play style, other dog compatibility, any aggression triggers and the dog’s ability to give and take correction. This profile serves as the conversation starter for potential adopters and allows shelter staff to find the right fit for every situation.
Currently, the Alliance is organizing monthly Pack Walks for shelter pets. With a play yard, volunteers can have the opportunity to interact and engage with available dogs more frequently. It will also serve as a wonderful spot for rescue groups and potential adopters to get to know the East Orange Shelter dogs.
We received specifications from Dogs Play for Life to learn how to create the most effective play yard. Working with local landscape designer Catherine Redd, we created a plan to include features for optimal use 365 days a year.
